Neither the generalization of “women,” nor the modern individualistic definitions of “freedom” involved here are defensible. Women’s history has its own historiography, and one which, inevitably, tells as much about the periods that produced it as about the experience of early medieval women. During and after the Enlightenment, “the condition of women” was seen as an important marker of civilization. 35 This is, in fact, an interesting example not so much of women’s history as of gender history.

Much was done orally and never committed to writing, including, for example, in judicial cases. 10 We cannot make any simple link between written form and contemporary perception of significance. Important things were not necessarily written down. One corollary of this first generalization is a second: we should not sources 27 take the written form for granted. For this period, the historian’s key questions – who was writing this and why – have a particular sharpness. The answers to the “who” would be, overwhelmingly, churchmen and women throughout the period and across Britain and Ireland, though there is little clear evidence of women writing in Ireland.
