From the INTRODUCTION.
In all languages owning a good built expiratory accessory there's discovered an inclination to weaken the syllables which stand at the decrease phases of accentuation. The power dedicated to the creation of the syllable on which the primary accessory rests makes priceless a discount within the strength of the expiration of the opposite syllables of the be aware. The vowels of those syllables then exhibit a lack of sonority; and are vulnerable to be decreased to that caliber which calls for the smallest amount of expiratory strength for his or her articulation. simply that half is left that is completely precious for the lifestyles of the syllable. Or, in different instances, the aid may work nonetheless farther. Then the weaker syllables disappear totally; the power as soon as expended on their construction is going to swell the strain given to the extra hugely accented syllables, they usually lose their self sustaining life. to monitor the impression of those developments, we have now simply to check a language with a chromatic—or musical—accent with one owning a robust expiratory rigidity. within the former, the entire vowels are articulated pretty and customarily preserved via lengthy sessions of improvement; within the latter, they're first diminished in strength, their articulation is slurred or hasty, and so they frequently disappear fullyyt. for instance, in old Greek, which had absolutely a tone-accent, there are virtually no examples of the syncope of unaccented vowels. the single circumstances of loss are end result of the next contraction of 2 vowels status in hiatus after the outfall of an intervocal j or w. yet within the Teutonic department, however, the vowels of the unaccented syllables are always weakened; from the earliest interval this tendency could be saw, and its operation is unchecked at the moment day. In glossy English those vowels are regularly slurred in pronunciation, and are often weakened to the so-called '' irrational'' vowel (the sound of u in but), that's many times a trifling voice-glide, with no determined articulation.

The early post-war period was marked by much industrial unrest and trade-union militancy. Thil> was partly because economic conditions were bad - for an immediate post-war boom, coupled with considerable inflation, collapsed suddenly in 1920 into a slump and heavy unemployment. But it was also because the ideas of 'direct action' in vogue just before the war were still widely current among union leaders. In particular, the 'triple alliance' of the Miners, Railwaymen, and Transport Workers, which had been formed just before the war with the object of securing united pressure against their employers, had not yet been put to the test.

P. had been affiliated to the Labour Party since 1916, and it might have seemed natural for the new party also to have secured affiliation as a Socialist society. s The decision was an indication of the hardening discipline of the party as well as of its hostility to extreme revolutionary tactics. The decision of the Executive was endorsed by a large majority at the 1921 Labour Party Conference. In 1922 came a new general election and with it the reward for the skilful generalship of Henderson in the preceding eight years.

The main changes that took place in the political climate in 19I7 were due to the two revolutions in Russia and to the entry of the United States into the war. The first Russian Revolution was greeted with great enthusiasm on the Left, as was shown by the success of a special conference at Leeds in June, summoned by the United Socialist Council. P. , which were both now affiliated to the Labour Party. The conference was attended by over a thousand delegates from local Socialist branches, from trade-union branches, and from trades councils.
