Though positive evidence is lacking, a reference to the recapture of Beaumaris castle suggests that it did fall into Welsh hands for a short while during 1404–5. Newborough, too, had become exposed to the ill effects of war; several houses and lands were burnt. By this time Anglesey was certainly free of English control. The years 1405–6 were the apogee of Glyn Dwr’s power. As prince of Wales, his coat of arms was the royal arms of the princes of Gwynedd (four lions rampant). But in 1405 he also suffered a major reversal in Anglesey.

By 1298 the castle could be defended; its first constable, William de Felton, commanded a garrison force of 130 men. Two rings of walls, surrounded by a moat, had the added feature of a small dock that enabled supply ships to sail directly from the Menai Straits up to the castle gateway. Over £14,500 would be spent between 1295 and 1330, yet it still proved too expensive to have the project completed to the original plan.
