Though positive evidence is lacking, a reference to the recapture of Beaumaris castle suggests that it did fall into Welsh hands for a short while during 1404–5. Newborough, too, had become exposed to the ill effects of war; several houses and lands were burnt. By this time Anglesey was certainly free of English control. By 1298 the castle could be defended; its first constable, William de Felton, commanded a garrison force of 130 men.
